Title: In the Wake of Neil Gunn (Mike Vass)
Release date: October 2014
In 1937, Neil Gunn quit his job at the Customs Office in Inverness to pursue his writing career full time. The first thing he did was to sell his house and buy a boat in the North of Skye. He spent a summer sailing Scotland’s beautiful West Coast, seeking inspiration for his writing. May 2014 saw Mike Vass sail the West Coast of Scotland himself, recreating this voyage and finding inspiration for his own composition. Follow the journey here.

The Archive Project began in summer 2012, giving 7 young musicians from the Edinburgh Youth Gaitherin the chance to explore the sound and photographic archives at the School of Scottish Studies, University of Edinburgh. The aim was to find inspiration among the thousands of field recordings housed in the Archives: Scots songs, Gaelic songs, stories, recollections, poetry, fiddle tunes, piobaireachd, canntaireachd and much more, creating inventive new music.

String-TheoryTitle: String Theory (Mike Vass)
Release date: December 2010
A current favourite among scientists in search of an all- encompassing hypothesis is super string theory, according to which elementary particles are likened to the notes sounded by a violin string under varying tension. Mike Vass co-opts this concept with poetic licence for his New Voices premiere, which seeks to unite the disparate elements of his own creative universe in cahoots with some of his favourite musicians.
